(1) Imo State University, Owerri.

(2) Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri

(3) Michael Okpara College of Agriculture, Umuagwo

(4) Federal University of Technology, Ihiagwa

(5) The Polytechnic, Nekede

The first two are controlled and supervised by the State Ministry of Education while the third is controlled and supervised by the State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources.  The fourth and fifth above, are controlled by the Federal Government.

Five other agencies under the control of the State Ministry of Education are:

(i) The Secondary Education Management Board (SEMB)

(ii) The State Primary Education Board (SPEB)

(iii) The Agency for Adult and Non Formal Education

(iv) The Imo State Library Board

(v) The Imo State Scholarship Board

Private and public interests are also represented in the ownership of Educational Institutions at all levels in the State.
